RAINFALL, CLIMATE AND TEMPERATURE OF HIMACHAL PRADESH

Due to variation in elevation(350m-7025m) the climatic conditions are also variable in the state.The climatic conditions vary from hot and subhumid tropical in the south-west to temperate, cold, alpine and glacial in the Northern and Eastern high mountains. During winter snowfall takes place upto an altitude of about 1200m sometime, but it does not last long there. It is only beyond 2500m of height that snow lasts long because of very low temperature. Most of the rainfall in the state is recorded during the months of June to September except the Eastern parts of the state where it is received during the months of January to March. The average annual rainfall in the state is 152 cm (60inches). The highest rainfall occurs in Kangra district-particularly in the area around Dharamshala (350 cm) and Palampur, followed by Shimla district.

The most wet part of the State is Dharamshala which has the record of receiving an annual average rainfall of 350 cm. Spiti in Lahaul-Spiti district receives the lowest rainfall being enclosed by high mountains on all sides (rain shadow effect), recording below 50 mm of rain.

The Himachal Pradesh rain shadow areas of are:

The Lahaul Valley across the Peer-Panjal range upto Udaipur, 
The tract along the Chenab river, 
The Spiti Valley and
The upper Sutiej Valley upstream at Wangtu. 

Temperature decreases while moving from West to East, maximun temperature is received in some parts of Una district. Above 20°C temperature marks a hot month. 

Usually the year is divided into three broad seasons : 

☑ Winter (Hyund-October to Februaiy) 
☑ Summer (Taundi-March to June) 
☑ Rainy Season (Barsat-July to September)
☑ Spring [(Mid February to March) is transition period between winter and summer and that between Barsat and winter is autumn (late September to October).

The state can aptly be divided into four climatic regions on the basis of climatic conditions like temperature, rainfall and altitude. 

☑ Tropical - Below 2000m from the sea level. 
☑ Temperature - Between 2000m to 3000m from sea level. 
☑ Sub-Arctic - Between 3500m to 4500m above sea level.
☑ Arctic - Above 4500m from the sea level.
