Fairs and Festivals of Himachal Pradesh :

Himachal Pradesh is a land of colorful people who loves the festivals and celebrate local festivals and fairs with great enthusiasm. Most of the Himachal fairs and festivals are associated with the different kinds of seasonal changes. There are several folklores and local pahari songs which are sung at the onset of these festivals. These fairs and festivals of Himachal offer a clear sight into the lives, the beliefs and the traditional customs of the rural life in Himachal Pradesh. Each district in State has its own sequence of annual fairs and festivals which are symbolic to the sociological and historical  background of that area or district. Festivals, Fairs and Culture of Himachal have an important place in the heart of the people in Himachal Pradesh.

List of Fairs and Festivals Celebrated in Himachal Pradesh:

1). Nalwari Fair :

This Fair is mainly held in Luhnu ground of Bilaspur District in Himachal Pradesh. This is state level fair in Himachal.

Salient Features of Nalwari Fair :

● The Nalwari Fair is held in month of March at Luhnu ground of Bilaspur District.
● W. Goidstein, the Suprintendent of Shimla Hill States, conceived the idea of this fair in the year 1889 A.D.
● Nalwari Fair is also celebrated in Karsog of Mandi District and it is District level fair.

2). Naina Devi Fair :

This Fair is also celebrated in Bilaspur District in Himachal Pradesh. This is fair is held in Naina Devi Temple.

Salient Features of Naina Devi Fair :

● The Naina Devi Fair is held in the Month of August at Naina Devi Termple in Bilaspur District of Himachal Pradesh.

3). Markanda Fair :

This Fair is also celebrated in Bilaspur District in Himachal Pradesh. This is fair is held in Jhukhala, Bilaspur.

Salient Features of Markanda Fair :

● The Markanda Fair is held in the month of April in Bilaspur District.

4). Minjar Fair :

This Fair is celebrated in Chawagan Tehsile of Chamba Distirict.This Fair is National Level Fair. And people came from many other state of India to enjoying this fair.

Salient Features of Minjar Fair :

● Minjar Fair started by Raja Sahil Varman. 
● Begining from the secand Sunday in the month of August it continues for seven days. 
● On the concluding day the devotees offer Minjars (Maize flowers), a coin, a fruit, a coconut and a few paddy tentacles to God Varuna at Ravi river.

5). Suhi Fair :

This Fair is celebrated in Chamba Tehsile of Himachal. this is district level fair.

Salient Features of Suhi Fair :

● The Suhi Fair is celebrated in the month April, this fair is exclusively for Women and Children of Himachal Pradesh. 
● This fair is celebrated to pay tribute to the Rani Naina Devi (the queen of Raja Sahil Varman) who had sacrified herself to bring water in Chamba District of Himachal.

6). Manimahesh Yatra :

This yatra is held in Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh.

Salient Features of Manimahesh Yatra :

● Manimahesh Yatra is ends to the sacred Manimahesh Lake in the Bharmaur Region of Chamba District. 
● Begining from Sri Krishna Janmashtami (in the month of August) it ends on Radhashtami.
● The official yatra continues with the start of 'Chhari' from the Temple of  Lakshaminarayan in Chamba District of Himachal.

7). Phul Yatra Fair :

This yatra is held in Killar(Pangi) of Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh. It is state level fair.

Salient Features of Phul Yatra Fair :

● In the month of September-October to mark the start of closing season in this snow bound valley.

8). Bhojri Festival :

This Festival is celebrated in Chamba District of Himachal.

Salient Features of Bhojri Festival :

● This festival is celebrated for two days following the Minjar fair and is mainly celebrated by women and girls only.

9). Chhitrari Yatra :

This Yatra is held in Chamba District of Himachal. This is District level festival. This yatra is organised in the September month.

10). Nagini Fair :

This Fair is held in Nurpur of Kangra District in Himachal Pradesh. It is district level fair. This religious Fair held in the Month of Shrawana.

11). Dal Fair :

This Fair is held in Dharamshala of Kangra District in Himachal Pradesh. This Fair is organised in the Month of August.

12.) JawalaMukhi Fair :

This Fair is held in JawalaMukhi of Kangra District in Himachal Pradesh. It is National level fair.

Salient Features of JawalaMukhi Fair :

● Held twice a year during Nevratras to worship goddess Durga.
● In this fair people from other states also came mainly from Punjab.

13). Kaleshwar Fair :

This Fair is held in Kangra District. This is state level fair and Held in the month of April on the Baisakhi Day.

14). Shivratri Fair :

This Fair is held in Kathgarh and Baijnath of Kangra District in Himachal. This is District and State level fairs. This Fair is also Held in Paddal Ground of Mandi and that it National Level Fair of Himachal Pradesh. 

Salient Features of Shivratri Fair : 

● This fair is Celebrated on the Shivratri Day.
● The Mandi Shivratri Fair was started by Raja Ajber Sen in year 1527 A.D.
● The Mandi Shivratri Fair is beginning from the Shivratri day with the Pooja at Bhootnath Temple it continues for next 7 days.

15). Summer Festival :

This Festival is celebrated in Bilaspur of Kangra District. This is state level festival and Held in the month of May. The Summer Festival of Shimla is the National Level Festival.

16). Lohri Festival :

This Festival is celebrated in Pragpur of Kangra District. This is state level fair and Held in the month of January. 

17). Holi Fair :

This Fair is held in Palampur of Kangra District. This is state level fair and the festival of colours celebrated in the March month. The Holi Festival is also celebrated in Sujanpur of Hamirpur District at National Level. 

18). Winter Carnival :

Winter Carnival is celebrated in Manali of Kullu District. This is state level fair and Held in the month of February. 

19). Dhungri Fair :

Dhungri Fair is celebrated in Manali of Kullu District. This is District level fair and Held in the month of May. This Fair is devoted to Goddess Hidimba

20). Dushehra Festival :

Dushehra Festival is celebrated in Dhalpur of Kullu District. This is also called "Kullu Ka Dushehra". This Festival is National Level Festival of Himachal Pradesh.

Salient Features of "Kullu Ka Dushehra" :

● Kullu Dushehra begining with the arrival of Dhungri (Hidimba) Devi from Manali on Vijay Dasmi continues for 7 days. 
● It was started in year 1651 A.D. by Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu.

21). Bhunda Festival :

Bhunda Festival is celebrated in Nirmand of Kullu District.

Salient Features of Bhunda Festival :

● Bhunda is the Kumbha festival of Hill people. 
● It is celebrated at an interval of every twelve years. 
● This festival is connected with the worship of Lord Parshu Ram.

22). Budhi Diwali Festival :

Budhi Diwali Festival is also celebrated in Nirmand of Kullu District.

Salient Features of Budhi Diwali Festival :

● A three day long fair held on Maghar Amawas. 
● The fair is associated with the battle of Mahabharata which is said to have started on that day.

23). Sarhi Yatra Fair :

Sarhi Yatra Fair is celebrated in Naggar of Kullu District. This Fair is organised in May Month.

24). Chaichu Fair : 

Chaichu Fair is celebrated in Rewalsar of Mandi District. This Fair is State Level Fair. Chaichu a religious fair beginning on 13th April every  year in Mandi district Himachal Pradesh.

25).Skodi Fair :

Skodi Fair is celebrated in Dhog (Joginder Nagar) of Mandi District. Skodi Fair is District Level Fair. Skodi Fair is  a 3-day-long fair held in the month of April in the honour of a woman who had performed Sati there.

26). Nalwar Fair :

Nalwar Fair is celebrated in Sunder Nagar of Mandi District. Nalwar Fair is State Level Fair. Nalwar Fair is Celebrated in April Month.

27). Mahunag Fair :

Mahunag Fair is  celebrated in Karsog of Mandi District and it is District level fair. Mahunag Fair is held in May Month.

28). Tseeshu Fair :

Tseeshu Fair is celebrated in Rewalsar of Mandi District.

Salient Features of Tseeshu Fair :

● Tseeshu Fair is a Budhist Religious Fair held on the 10th of the first month of Tibetan New Year which generally falls in February-March. 
● Tseeshu Fair is in commemoration of the Birthday of their spritual Leader Padamsambhava in the 8th Century A.D.

29). Gasota Fair : 

The Gasota Fair is celebrated in Hamirpur District of Himachal Pradesh. Gasota Fair is comes in May Month.

30). Baba Balak Nath Fair :

Baba Balak Nath Fair is celebrated in Deotsidh of Hamirpur District of Himachal Pradesh. Baba Balak Nath Fair is State Level Fair.

Salient Features of Baba Balak Nath Fair :

● Celebrated in the June month  at the holy shrine of Baba Balaknathji at Deotsidh.

31). Hamir Festival :

The Hamir Festival is celebrated in Hamirpur District of Himachal Pradesh. The Hamir Festival is State Level Festival comes in September-October Month.


32). Fulaich Festival :

Fulaich Festival is celebrated by people of Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh. Fulaich Festival is District Level Festival.

Salient Features of Fulaich Festival :

● Fulaich Festival is Known as "festival of flowers". 
● The festival starts with the animal sacrifices & soon whole village gathers on a hilltop & look for the beautiful "Ladra flower". 
● It is mainly Celebrated to owner the dead relatives & to pray for their peace of soul.

33). Lossar Festival :

Lossar Festival is celebrated in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti Districts of Himachal Pradesh. Lossar Festival is a Tibetan New Year festival celebrated in the in the last week of February.

34). Ladarcha Fair :

Ladarcha Fair is celebrated in Kaza of Lahaul-Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh. Ladarcha is a State Level Fair. Ladarcha Fair is a religious and cultural fair held in July month indicates the termination of summer season.

35). Pori Fair :

The Pori Fair is celebrated in Triloknath of Lahaul-Spiti District. Pori Fair is District Level Fair. Pori Fair is Celebrated to worship Lord Trilokinath.

36). Jijed Festival :

Jijed Festival is celebrated in Lahaul-Spiti (Thanggyud Monastery). The main attraction of the festival is Masked Dance performed with the objective to protect people from diseases and epidemics. The Jijed Festival is Held in the October month.

37). Guitor Festival :

Guitor Festival is mainly celebrated in Kee, Tabo, Dhankar Monasteries of Lahaul-Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh. The Guitor Festival is Celebrated in the October month is known as Masked Dance.

38). Gochi Festival :

The Gochi Festival is celebrated in Keylong of Lahaul-Spiti District in Himachal Pradesh. The Gochi Festival is Celebrated in the month of February jointly by all the families, where male child were born in the proceeding year.

39). Halda Festival :

The Halda festival is mainly celebrated at Chandra and Bhaga Valleys of Lahaul-Spiti District in Himachal Pradesh. 

Salient Features of Halda Festival :

● Halda festival is celebrated in the month of December-January is like a Diwali festival to the peopie of Lahaul-Spiti. 
● The festiivities centre around Shiskar Apa who is the goddess of wealth in lamastic Pantheon as to the people of this region. 
● Lit Cedar twigs are carried by the people from every household to form the flames of a bonfire at a place selected b the Lamas.

40). Lavi Fair :

The Lavi Fair is held in Rampur of Shimla District in Himachal Pradesh. Lavi Fair is a National Level Fair.

Salient Features of Lavi Fair :

● The Lavi Fair is most ancient trade fair of the state is held in the November month.
● The word Lavi is derived from the word "Leo" which in local parlance means a "sheet of woolen cloth".

41). Pather Ka Khel Fair : 

Pather Ka Khel Fair is mainly held in Halog of Shimla District in Himachal Pradesh. The Pather Ka Khel Fair is Celebrated on the second day of Diwali in the Month of Kartik or October-November.

42). Rohru Fair :

The Rohru Fair is Celebrated in Rohru of Shimla district in April month and Rohru festival is State Level Festival.

43). Fag Fair :

Fag Fair is held in Rampur of Shimla district it is District Level Fair.

44). Sippi Fair :

The Sippi Fair is held in Mashobra of Shimla District and it comes in District Level Fair. Sippi Fair is celebrated in May Month.

45). Purag Fair :

Purag Fair is held in Kotkhai of Shimla District. Purag Fair is District Level Fair. The Purag Fair is Held in month of April in the honour of Mahadev Devta, who is carried in Kamahli, a silver pot, to river Giri to bathe ceremoniously and is then brought back.

46). Buffalo Fair :

The Buffalo Fair is celebrated in Kufri (Mashobra) of Shimla District. Buffalo Fair is celebrated in the month of September.


47). Renuka Fair :

The Renuka Fair is celebrated in Renukaji of Sirmour District in Himachal Pradesh. Renuka Fair is State Level Fair. 

Salient Features of Renuka Fair :

● The Renuka fair begins for 10 days after Diwali - the festival of lights, in the month of November and continues for six days.
● The fair is celebrated annually to comemmorate the meeting of Lord Parshuram and his mother Renuka.

48). Trilokpur Fair :

The Trilokpur Fair is mainly held in Trilokpur Temple of Sirmour District. Trilokpur Fair is devoted to Goddess Bala Sundari and celebrated in Sharad Navratras. 

49). Bawan Dwadsi Fair :

Bawan Dwadsi Fair is celebrated in Sarahan of Sirmour District. This is District Level fair and comes in September Month.

50). Shoolini Fair :

The Shoolini Fair is Celebrated in Solan District of Himachal Pradesh. Shoolini Fair is a State Level Fair.

Salient Features of Shoolini Fair : 

● This Fair held In the month of June, continues for three days.
● The fair begins with a proccession carrying the palanquin of the presiding diety Shoolini Mata to Durga temple in the heart of the Solan.

51). Sari Fair :

The Sari Fair is Held in Arki of Solan District in Himachal Pradesh. The Arki Fair is Celebrated in the month of July, this fair is known for the "bull fighting".

52). Chintpurni Fair :

The Chintpurni Fair is held in Chintpurni Temple of Una District in Himachal Pradesh. This Fair is organised in Navratras.

53). Baba Barrbhag Singh Fair :

Baba Barrbhag Singh Fair is organised in Maiddi of Una District in the June Month.

54). Piplu or Piploo Fair :

Piplu or Piploo Fair is organised in Piploo temple in Bangana Tehsile of Una District in the Month of June on the occasion of Nirjla EkadasiEkadasi. This Fair runs around 3 days. This is District level Fairs.

55). Jamasni Mata Fair :

Jamasni Mata Fair is organised in Sarain (Jamasni Mata Temple) in Bangana Tehsile of Una District. This Festival comes before 20 days of Piploo Fair.
