On the emergence of Himachal Pradesh, the Government of India made provision for judicial administration in the state under the Himachal Pradesh Judicial Order 1948, under which the judicial commissioner was appointed for the state. Along with this two districts and session courts and 27 subordinate courts were also set up. The judicial commissioner bench started functioning from 15th August, 1948. Mr. J.N. Banerjee was the first judicial commissioner of the state.
In 1966 the Government of India passed Delhi High Court Act, under which in May, 1967, the jurisdiction of Delhi High Court was extended to Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh and a bench of Delhi High Court was set up in Shimla.
Since 1st May, 1967 to 1972, the Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh was under the Judicial Jurisdiction of a bench of Delhi High Court.
On 25th January, 1971, when Himachal got full statehood, it Constituted its own high courts with three members, seat at Shimla. Justice Late Mirza Hamiddulla Beg was appointed first Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh. At present there are one Chief Justice and seven other judges.
